Be sure to check all lecture notes…remember, test #1 is based on in class lectures in addition to your chapters. If
you were not in class any day, be sure to get the notes from a classmate. If you use this study guide, answer all of
the questions, along with reviewing your notes and chapters, you will pass your test. Your test will comprise of:
multiple choice, matching, definition and short answer questions. Keep in mind, the questions below may be asked

Define: business communication. What is an organizational culture in a business/workplace?

Why is nonverbal communication considered to be ambiguous?
What are the six ways to help with clarity and ambiguity in language?
Why is it important to use powerful language in such professional communication like resumes? What is the
perception of poor language and grammar in a cover letter and resume?
What is the difference between low level and high level abstractions in language use? Provide an example of
each.
Define: genderlects. Differentiate between masculine and feminine speech. Explain each.
Define: communication climate. What are the two types of messages that occur in communication climates?
What are the ways that people approach conflict and the ways in how is it handled?
Who is your favorite communications teacher? If you get this wrong, you fail the test!!! :-)
