Cardiovascular
System
(circulatory)
The cardiovascular system consists
of organs and tissues that transport
essential materials to body cells and
remove their waste.
facts

 Blood is pumped by the heart which beats 60-100 times a
minute.

Without blood we couldn’t keep warm, cool off or fight
infections.

 You have over 80,000 miles of blood vessels in your body.
The heart



Made up 4 chambers
(atriums & ventricles)
The “lub dub” sound
you hear are the 4
valves of the heart
opening and closing
Blood flows from the
heart to the lungs back
to the heart and out to
the body.
Blood




Plasma: transports blood
solids, nutrients and
hormones.
Red blood cells: carry
oxygen to cells and carbon
dioxide away from them.
White blood cells: help fight
disease and infection by
attacking germs.
Platelets: help blood form a
clot at the site of a wound
Blood Vessels
Transport blood through the body



Arteries: carry
oxygenated blood
from the heart to the
rest of the body
Veins: carry blood
without oxygen from
the body to the heart
and lungs (appears
blue)
Capillaries: tiny blood
vessels
Problems




Arteriosclerosis: condition in which the arteries
harden due to a build up fat in the arteries. This
reduces the amount of blood that can flow
through.
Hypertension: a condition in which the blood
pressure is constantly higher than normal.
Stroke: usually results from blood clots that block
vessels in the brain, or from the rupture of a blood
vessel.
Heart Attack: a blockage of the flow of blood to
the heart
How to keep your
cardiovascular system
healthy


Limit fats in your foods: fat
can cause fatty deposits in
the inner walls of the
arteries.
Get regular exercise:
Regular activity
strengthens your heart
muscle and pumps blood
through the vessels
cleaning them out.
How to keep your
cardiovascular system
healthy


Avoid tobacco: nicotine
narrows arteries, requiring
blood pressure to be
higher to circulate blood.
Manage stress positively:
when you are stressed
your body secretes
adrenaline, a substance
that increases blood
pressure.
