Issues of the American Civil War wikipedia , lookup
One of the major causes of the civil war was the fact that several states seceded from the United States, thereby essentially becoming their own country. The issue of slavery had caused the relationship between northerners and southerners had become steadily worse. In 1860, just as senators sat down to come to an agreement, South Carolina voted at a state convention to secede from the Union, because they were afraid that president-elect Abraham Lincoln would abolish slavery. 9 other states followed South Carolina. When Lincoln finally became president in 1861, he urged the seceded states to come back and join the union. They refused. On April 12, 1861, a group of men from South Carolina opened fire on Fort Sumter, a Union fort in Charleston Harbor. After more than 24 hours of enduring heavy fire, the men defending the fort were forced to surrender. When citizens of the Union heard that a fort was forced to surrender by seceded states, they were furious. There was no chance of the senate coming to an agreement now. The disagreement between the north and the south would have to be settled by a war.
