Folate metabolism in plants. An Arabidopsis homolog of the mammalian mitochondrial folate
transporter mediates folate import into chloroplasts

The distribution of folates in plant cells suggests a complex traffic of the vitamin between the organelles and the cytosol. The
Arabidopsis thaliana protein AtFOLT1 encoded by the At5g66380 gene is the closest homolog of the mitochondrial folate
transporters (MFTs) characterized in mammalian cells. AtFOLT1 belongs to the mitochondrial carrier family, but GFP-tagging
experiments and Western blot analyses indicated that it is targeted to the envelope of chloroplasts. By using the glycine auxotroph
Chinese hamster ovary glyB cell line, which lacks a functional MFT and is deficient in folates transport into mitochondria, we

In spring 1982 one specimen of A nacamptis pyram idalis was found along a highway in Zeeuwsch- Vlaanderen between Sluiskil
and Terneuzen, together with Ophiogtossum vulgatum. The author doubts if the orchid can survive in this locality.

A GIS study of breeding bird habitats in the Flemish coastal dunes and its implications for nature
management

In 1997-98 an area of approximately 1300ha of Flemish coastal dunes was censused for breeding birds. Territory maps were
drawn and compared with maps on vegetation, hydrology and recreation pressure by the overlay method in a GIS. Twinspan
recognized seven breeding bird communities; a DCA-ordination revealed the dominant importance of vegetation succession and
the degree of urbanization for breeding bird community variance. Breeding habitats are characterized for all territorial songbirds.
The comparison of the distribution of potential habitat and actually occupied habitat stresses the importance of increase of the

Artificial hard substrates as ecosystems: a case-study of the Belgian coast

Rocky shores (natural intertidal hard substrates) are known for their high density and especially for their high diversity of marine
organisms (e.g. algae, invertebrates, fishes and birds). They are complex ecosystems in which the biological richness results from
biotic (predation, competition, grazing) and abiotic (tides, waves, coastal topography) interactions. The majority of the organisms
living on rocky shores are restricted to this habitat, forming distinct communities that are significantly different from the
surrounding soft substrates (e.g. sandy beaches).In contrast to the French and English coast, natural rocky shores do not exist in

Donkey diet in a flemish coastal dune area in the first year of grazing

The composition of the diet of a small herd of donkeys in an 80ha nature reserve in the coastal dunes of Flanders (Belgium) was
investigated in the first year after its introduction. The animals predominantly ate grasses with a clear preference for
<i>Festuca juncifolia, Elymus repens</i> and <i>Koeleria albescens</i> and the sedge <i>Carex
arenaria</i>. <i>Calamagrostis epigejos</i> and <i>Ammophila arenaria</i> appeared as only
