The AP…
• Placement: Remove all metallic objects.
•Place patient with back against the IR.
•Patient looking straight so not to
impose chin.
•Center clavicle to center of IR.
•Central Ray: Perpendicular to
mid- clavicle
•40 SID

The entire clavicle including both the ac
joint and the sc joint.
The mid-clavicle will superimpose the
superior scapula angle.
Medial clavicle will be next to the
vertebral column.
Lateral end aligns with the acromion.
The AP axial view 
• Placement: Same as the AP. No movement of Patient.
•Central Ray: Perpendicular to mid-clavicle
•Angle 15- 30 Degrees cephalad.

entire clavicle including both joints.
The medial end superimposes the first and
second rib.
The lateral end is superior to acromion
No imposition of superior scapula angle
Clavicle bows slightly upward.
Most of the clavicle will be free of
imposition.

The AP…
• Placement: Remove all metallic objects.
•Place patient with back against the IR.
•Center scapula to center of IR.
•IR should be 2 inches above shoulder
and 2 inches medial form rib boarder.
•Abduct arm 90 degrees.
•Supinate the hand (moves scapula lateral
to clear more thoracic structures)

Perpendicular to the mid-scapula area
2 inches below the coracoid process or
level of axilla and 2 inches medially.

Medial portion will be seen through the
thoracic structures.

Placement: face patient toward cassette in and
anterior oblique position with affected
shoulder against the IR
Have patient reach across the chest and grab
opposite shoulder. (body) less rotation
Have patient drop arm and place behind back.
( acromion and coracoid)
Feel scapula and rotate scapula until a true
lateral position is reached. About 30-45degree
for scapula and 45-60 for patient.

The vertebral and lateral borders of body
superimposed.
Body free of imposition by ribs and in
profile
The scapula should form a Y.
The acromion and coracoid as the arms and
the scapula body as the leg.
