Health and Medical Journalism
Wednesdays 9:05 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.
Spring 2009
Grady College Room 205
What skills do reporters and public relations professionals need to write about
health and medicine?
What is the relationship between health and poverty in Northeast Georgia?
The basic mission of this graduate-level course is equipping you to write accurate, timely,
interesting and credible articles for audiences large or small. You will choose a beat in
Northeast Georgia and explore how the health of individuals and communities is affected
by wealth, local resources, shifts in government policy and scientific advances.
You will sharpen your interview skills, learn to use peer-reviewed journals and databases
effectively, become familiar with local health departments and agencies, cover a major
medical meeting in Atlanta, visit laboratories and have the opportunity to participate in
the annual meeting of the Association of Health Care Journalists in Seattle.
Multimedia storytelling is encouraged and the class requires a weekly blog and four
articles. One assignment requires you to collaborate with advanced photojournalism
students to prepare a story package for publication.
Basic news and feature writing prerequisites, either JRMC 8350 “Special Topics,
Graduate Newsroom” or undergraduate journalism courses, are required. 3 hours credit.
