Summer Training 2012 – Minor Prophets
7.5.12/ Br. Andrew Yu/ Hymn #39, 918
People look for signs. We only have one unique miracle – the sign of Jonah – no flying horse, house,
miracles – just one miracle. An evil and adulterous generation they seek after a sign. A sign shall not be
given to them – the sign of Jonah the prophet. For just as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for 3
days and 3 nights so will the Son of Man be in the belly for 3 days and 3 nights. That is a sign, that is a
real miracle. You have got to see how wonderful this miracle is.
This sign is composed of Christ’s death, burial, and His resurrection. That is a real miracle. Are you
excited about that? That is a real sign. Death, what is so wonderful about death? We will see.
I.
A. Nullifies – is very important. 2 Tim. 1:10 – make of no effect. Sterilize and detoxify it. Get rid of it.
Through the death of Christ – the sting is pulled out. The Lord has taken out the sting of death. When
you try to make something no longer effective. It makes the death sterile – no longer effective that is
what it is. Christ in His death, He nullified death. There is no death and it has lost its sting. Finally, the
death will be cast into the lake of fire. Death lost its sting. In Rom. 6:6 – made of none effect. The body
of sin is annulled. It is unemployed, jobless, and inactive. Fired. 2 Kings 4 – Elijah and poisonous stew,
Elijah did something to it and it was no longer harmful that is what Christ did on the Christ- He
neutralized it. That through the cross, He destroyed the devil. To nullify means to render inoperative.
To lose its force influence and power. We are not afraid of death because it has lost its power.
2. On the cross it was fulfilled – the seed of the woman what did HE do on the cross, He bruised the
head of the serpent. In the fullness of time, the Son of God came in the form of the flesh – He might
destroy the devil. Something HE did on the cross, He destroyed the devil. He destroyed the one who
has the power of death. Rom. 8:3 – draw your attention to this verse.  why did He have to take on
the likeness of the flesh of sin? John 3 – brass serpent. What was hung up? The serpent to deal with the
poison of the serpent. Christ on the cross dealt with sin and all the nature of sin. Sin is Satan
personified. While He was on the cross He was dealing with Satan, He crucified Satan. Satan has
nothing in Christ, but when Christ went to the cross, He took on a flesh – the flesh of sin, the head of the
serpent is bruised! Concerning sin, concerning Satan condemned sin. Condemned Satan. Sin is related
to Satan himself. He destroyed the one who has the power of death that is the devil.
3. All the demons that were swarming around the cross were disengaged. They were stripped off. And
made a real procession.
“hill of ammunition” – 6 days war. 6/5/67 – war started. Israeli force went into action within 2 hrs. they
neutralized the Egyptian army 3 times. The fulfillment of Luke where the tide of the Gentile – Jerusalem
will be troubled by the nations until the time is fulfilled.
Br. Lee prayed “I thank you for letting me see this day” – the day of Israeli taking over Jerusalem (Br. Lee
was in hospital and prayed with another Br. Daniel lee and kneeled down)
4. 5 points are interesting – don’t overlook them.
a. the universal separation between God and man and has been abolished
b. spiritual earthquake
c. Broken once for all. When we go and preach the gospel – we tell people Satan is defeated, the
kingdom is God’s. When this happens, Satan is gone. When you tell the demons their kingdom is over,
they are gone!
d.
e. That is the power of His death – they were raised when Christ died, it was not during His resurrection.
The bodies of the saints that had fallen asleep were raised when Christ died.
The greatest sign is not the Lord’s death, but stayed in the earth 3 days and 3 nights. What did He do in
Hades?
One day was reading Acts 2 – His flesh was at rest, and His spirit was exuding. He was at my right hand
therefore I will not be moved. Resurrection power started right there on the first day while He was
going through it. It was not a business tour, get rid of Satan immediately. He took 3 days and 3 nights to
walk around in Hades. Those of you in Hades experience don’t just pray get me out of here.
It is not a nice place, it is a place of judgment.
3. Water encompassed my soul. Has your soul been soaked by water? That’s what you feel in Hades.
Like seaweed wrapped around your head.
Our spirit exudes, our heart – Christ’s heart rejoices, and his flesh rests in peace, because he has the
hope.
According to Jonah 2 Christ did 5 things:
1. Called on God
2. Turned to God
3. Remembered Jehovah – v. 7 – while Christ was in Hades – when he was there He offered sacrifices of
thanksgiving
4. Consecrating Himself – v. 9 – I will fully pay my vow. Psa. 16 – 5 points: 1. I have sent Jehovah before
me, because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.
5. Hope of resurrection – you will not abandon my soul to Sheol. You will make known to me the
pathways of life. All spoken when Christ was in the heart of the belly.
Is this a sign or not? That is the real sign.
1 Pet. 3:18 – while He was on the cross on the one hand He was being put to death at the same time He
was being made alive in His spirit. His death was triggering His being made alive. While the flesh was
dying the spirit was coming alive. Resurrection started on the cross – not on the 3rd day. He was being
made alive in the spirit- what is that spirit? the essence of Christ’s divinity. Triggered on the cross.
That spirit released from His body went to the underparts of the earth – started preaching to the spirit in
rebellion – that is the fallen angels who had formerly disobedied.
B. He started preaching the gospel in Hades.
1.
2.
C. He walked out triumphantly with the keys in His hands. Death is the trash collector and Hades is the
dump. When Christ came out of Hades, He took the keys of the jailer. How about that??
1. Christ was too active in Hades, so He was vomited out.
2. Isn’t that a gospel?
3.
D.
1. Don’t preach gimmicks. Preach what you see.
2.
II. Christ has been going to all the nations to speak the gospel of peace. Sinners can come freely to God.
A.
B.
C. God says turn! Turn!
God says you care for that tree, how about the thousands of people that were created in God’s image?
God says don’t you have pity on those people? They are vulnerable, sad, weak, and fragile. They need
someone to go and tell them the good news, that Christ has died for all and released the sinners. Isn’t
that our duty? Go and disciple all the nations?
D. We are here to announce Christ’s resurrection. We are not just here to tell people that God is love,
but we are here to tell people the sign of Jonah.
The gospel is not just God is love, but it is the power of God unto salvation. Let’s go to the world.
What is our heart? Our heart should be for the nation.
Nineveh was the biggest city on earth at that time – 3x bigger than Babylon. “Don’t I have pity on
them?” Or “regard for them” ? God desires all men to be saved and come to the full knowledge of the
truth. Passing out Bibles that is our responsibility.
Are you happy when heathens got saved?
Luke 15 – when one sinner repent the angels rejoice. But in Jonah when a city repents Jonah got angry.
What is going on?
Go and preach the gospel of God. Everywhere! Every nation! Shouldn’t you have pity on them? Oh I
am for my spirituality.
The story of the Hudson Taylor and the man drowning and the man asking how much will you pay me to
save the man? Lord, touch me, may I have pity on these people. We are so rich, we need to spread the
riches out.
A sinner received the Lord and asked how come it took so long for you to tell me this? To speak to the
sinners, we should grasp every opportunity.
III. Jonah had to overcome his prejudice of superiority over only for certain people.
“I am offended by God’s favor on other people. Because the right of my favor of God on me is now
enfringed”
Rom. 9-11 you see Paul was a bit much.
Paul overcame his pride of his heritage. Then he became an apostle to the nations. Once it was just to
one people, one culture, one heritage, now it’s beyond. Now I am an apostle to all the nations. The
word gentile and nation is exactly the same word.
God’s vision to Jonah was not just to one people but to all peoples, all tongues, and nations. How did
Paul get saved out of that feeling of racial superiority?
1. He saw he was been called as an apostle to the nations. When he saw his calling – transcends his own
preference.
2. Saw God’s sovereignty. If God wants to get His people, He will get His people. It has everything to do
with God’s sovereignty.
3. Saw God’s selection.
4. Saw God’s dispensational economy – realized that the Lord is moving through the Gentiles. Started
glorifying the nations.
5. Saw the blessing that came upon the nations – they praise God and become one Body. He witnessed
the blessing.
6. He saw that by blessing the Gentiles, the Jews eventually will be blessed.
