Writing Prompts for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Students will be required to write a 1200 word research-based essay (give or take 10%) on the concepts derived from
the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Write this paper in MLA or APA format in 12-point font in your preferred
word processor. The due date of the assignment is February 10th, 2017. Students may use online resources outside of
the assigned text. Use quotations and citation properly and appropriately. Do not plagiarize.
Using the assigned text as well as at least 2 other sources to answer ONE of the following prompts as your writing
assignment:
1. Dr. Gey had obtained samples of Mrs. Lacks’ cells without explicit permission. Discuss the ethical and legal
implications in the practice of medicine the method Dr. Gey used to obtain these cells and sell them to other
researchers. Also, explain the effect this decision had on the lives of those in Mrs. Lacks’ family.
2. Research has moved forwards by leaps and bounds since the propagation of the HeLa cell. Investigate and
explain the uses of these cells in at least three different current (within the last 20 years) discoveries or fields of
research. Explain how these cells have an advantage over other forms of human cell cultures.
3. Only within the last 100 years has the United States seen women’s suffrage, the civil rights movement and
privacy of information acts appear as laws to protect individuals. Discuss the social, economic and racial
injustices that played a part in the obtaining of these cells. Be sure to discuss the background of Mrs. Lacks in
order to better frame an understanding of these factors.
