Euthanasia—good or happy death
Two types of euthanasia
1) active—taking a life to avoid suffering
2) passive—allowing death to occur to avoid suffering
A) unnatural passive euthanasia—allowing someone to die by deliberately
withholding a natural means of sustaining life i.e. food, water, air.
B) Natural passive euthanasia—allowing someone to die by withholding unnatural
means of sustaining life.
Arguments for:
1) It is a moral right to die with dignity—Death is just the last stage of life and people
have a right to live a dignified life.
2) Right of privacy includes death with dignity—if the 14th amendment allows
abortion, then it should allow for one to end their life
3) Act of mercy to the sufferer—why make terminally ill patients suffer? We shoot horses
in burning barns—why not end the suffering of humans?
4) It is an act of mercy to the family—why should the family see the person suffer? It
alleviates pain of the family also.
5) Relieves family of financial strain—
6) Relieves society of social burden—cost of care often falls to government—number of
elderly in society will continue to increase.
Answering these arguments:
1) There is no moral right to kill—It is a sin!
2) The constitution gives no right to kill—life is an “unalienable” right protected
by the 5th and 14th amendment
3) Much can be learned through sufferingJas 1:2-4
2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
4) There is no price tag on human life
5) The end does not justify the means
