Mesopotamia was broken into city states. Each city state had a king as a
ruler. In the middle of the city state was a tall pyramid called a ziggurat.
The ziggurat was a temple that was a home to a god. There were many
gods in Mesopotamia. Each god lived in a different temple. The priests
were the leaders of the religion in Mesopotamia. The priests talked to the
gods and were the only people that were allowed to enter the temples.
Therefore, the priests were the only people that were allowed in the home
of the gods, and the only people allowed to speak to the gods.
