STEP FOUR: ISU Presentation Guidelines
DUE: Presentation Days TASK: Your job is to present an argument about why people in the class should consider reading your
novel. Use evidence from the novel (i.e. an exciting passage, interesting characters, narrative
techniques) that you feel is engaging, to convince your audience that your novel is the novel to read).
You will be asked to complete presentation planner. Length - 5 – 7 minutes.
YOU ARE THE RHETORICIAN
Rhetoric: the art or discipline that deals with the use of discourse, either spoken or written, to inform or persuade or motivate an audience,
whether that audience is made up of one person or a group of persons.
Your objective
Persuade your audience to read your novel
Use one media product
DO NOT simply summarize the plot – treat the plot like a movie trailer - highlights only, without revealing the
ending. Include a creative way to promote and/or discuss your novel. You may check with your teacher to see if
your idea is appropriate.
No power point presentations or YouTube videos!

THE MEDIA PRODUCT should be used as a device to enhance your speech. Refer to it effortlessly as
part of the presentation. It does not replace the speech, but works in conjunction with it. Use the
product as a tool of persuasion and NOT an after-thought. The product must be an original creation
that connects to a literary device, style, or story element, imagery, or figures of speech.
The Three Modes of Persuasion
1. By the appeal to their reason: LOGOS
2. By the appeal to their emotions: PATHOS
3. By the appeal of our personality or character: ETHOS
