Direct Democracy vs. Representative Democracy
Standard: SS-07-1.1.2 Students will describe and give examples to
support how some early civilizations (Greece) practiced democratic
principles (e.g., justice, equality, responsibility, freedom).
The concept of democracy developed in the Greek city-state of Athens
around the fifth century B.C. Since its’ development, democracy has
been modified to suit the needs of governments down throughout
history. Democracies have ranged from the direct, or pure, democracy
that was used in Athens to the representative democracy we have in the
United States today.
A. Explain how democracy developed in Athens, Greece.
Identify the issue—farmers versus nobles
Solon—What did he do for democracy in Ancient Athens?
Peisistratus—What did he do for democracy in Ancient
Athens?
Cleisthenes—What did he do for democracy in Ancient
Athens.
B. Compare and contrast (3 similarities & 3 differences) the
form of democracy in Ancient Greece with the form of
democracy we have in the United States today.

C. Analyze how Ancient Greece’s concept of democracy helped
