THEATRE TECHNICIAN Central Studio and Queen Mary’s Hall CASUAL Queen Mary’s College operates several income generating facilities across its vibrant 25 acre campus, including a leisure centre, theatre and facility lettings. Central Studio is a small professional theatre specifically designed to provide space as well as entertainment to the community hosting a range of events and performances, including live music, children’s theatre, comedy, conferencing and parties. PERSON SPECIFICATION The ideal applicant for this role is someone looking to gain further experience in the entertainments technical industry to enhance their professional skills and CV. The candidate should have practical knowledge of technical theatre and stage management. Ideally the candidate should have technical training and have some experience of working in the industry. Essential Criteria Experience and understanding of the needs of an arts centre dealing primarily with small scale touring theatre companies, bands, community youth and adult dance and drama groups, Willingness to support student lead productions and performances Practical knowledge of all areas of technical theatre, specialising in at least two of the following: Lighting design & operation. Live sound mixing for bands Set design & construction Self-motivated and able to work both as part of a team and without supervision Willing to work unsociable hours, including evenings and weekends Some knowledge of current Health and Safety legislation for places of public entertainment Willing to work with students and young people Effective written and oral communication skills Willing to undergo further training where necessary Desirable: Knowledge of First Aid procedures Computer literate Practical knowledge of the equipment and practices used in a professional recording studio Knowledge of the use of A/V equipment such as digital cameras and edit suites OHP, slide & video projectors April 17 As this work involves working with young people all successful candidates will be required to undertake a DBS check JOB DESCRIPTION Key outcomes Operate technical facilities, giving support to Central Studio’s and QMC’s professional programme of tours and performances, Performing Arts Department productions, College presentations, Community events in Queen Mary's Hall and the use of the recording studio and AV facilities by community users. Accountable to: Commercial Operations Manager Specific Responsibilities: 1 Artistic Programme The Casual Technician will have technical responsibility for professional, community and College events held at Central Studio as well as for events promoted by Central Studio at other venues, helping to ensure that all technical requirements are met. 2 Health and Safety Work with the full time Technicians to: Ensure that Central Studio / QMC Health and Safety policies are adhered to by all users Ensure that all users are clear about emergency procedures Assist with the implementation of a comprehensive maintenance programme for all Central Studio / QMC technical equipment and facilities 3 General Duties Ensure that all technical work is carried out in a professional and safe manner Favourably represent Central Studio and Queen Mary’s College in all aspects of its work Work together with colleagues in achieving the objectives of the College and Central Studio in an environment of mutual support, respect and co-operation Attendance at appropriate meetings and participation in training events where necessary Such other duties as are necessary from time to time, such as front of house, bar and box office duties CONTRACTUAL INFORMATION Type of employment: Casual Hours: Variable as required by the rota Days: Various as required by the rota Rate of pay: £7.68 - £10.18 depending on experience per hour plus paid holiday allowance (12.07%) April 17
