We are looking for a trained protein crystallographer. The main project is the
identification of inhibitors for the A chain of the cytotoxin called ricin. The project is
reasonably well advanced with several modest inhibitors now known from virtual
screening and high throughput screening of diversity libraries.
Future work will focus on improvement of inhibitors with the collaboration of a
synthetic team and cell and animal testing team. Structural analysis of new inhibitors is
important to the inhibitor design cycles. The structural biologists will be working with the
organic synthesis group to help design efficacious inhibitors as drug leads.
Applicants should have experience with X-ray data collection, reduction, and
analysis, and model building and refinement. In addition, experience with protein
purification, elementary molecular cloning, and kinetic assays is desirable.
There are several other structural projects in the laboratory, including two other
drug design project. In additon, we are engaged in an experimental Freshman research
project, dealing with in silico virtual screening, which may offer teaching opportunities to
candidates who are so inclined.
