Sentence Combining
Here's a list of useful sentence-combining techniques:
1. Glue Words
 Subordinating conjunctions: after, although, when, since, because, as, where, if,
before, until, so that, though, unless, as soon as, etc.
 Prepositions: into, on, over, below, of, beside, under, above, in, through,
beneath, around, etc.
2. WH Words:
 Relative pronouns: who, whom, whose, which, that (There are always
exceptions in the English language. Sorry!)
3. ING Words:
 Gerunds: ING Words which acts like a noun, e. g., "Swimming is a good exercise."
 Present participles: ING Words which acts like an adjective, e.g., "The turtle
chased the swimming boy."
Exercise 1:
Combine each of the following sentences in three different ways using Glue Words
(subordinating conjunctions and prepositions), WH Words (relative pronouns), and ING
Words (gerunds and present participles). Type your new sentences in the blank after
each question.
Example: Ginger Zigmon raises guinea pigs. She models high fashion clothing.
1. Ginger Zigmon, who raises guinea pigs, models high fashion clothing.
2. Besides modeling high fashion clothing, Ginger Zigmon raises guinea pigs.
3. Even though Ginger Zigmon models high fashion clothing, she raises guinea pigs.
4. While raising guinea pigs, Ginger Zigmon models high fashion clothing.

Exercise 2:
Combine each set of kernel sentences into one longer sentence using ING Words, Glue
Words, and WH Words. Type your new sentences after each question. Remember you
can scroll back to the list of combining words for ideas.
Example of two kernels to be combined:
Mrs. Ima Crouch was upset. She had assigned Sam a composition. The composition
contained sentence fragments.
Examples of three different resulting combinations:
1. Mrs. Ima Crouch was upset because the paper Sam wrote contained sentence
fragments. (Glue Word)
2. Sam, who wrote a paper with fragments in it, upset Mrs. Ima Crouch. (relative
pronoun = WH Word)
3. Upsetting Mrs. Ima Crouch, Sam wrote a composition containing fragments. (present
participle = ING Word)
Here's your chance:

shouted, "Yaahoo!"
