Chapter 8 Study Guide
Mendeleev made the first periodic table according to increasing atomic mass.
Periodic means repeating .
Periodic Law- properties of elements change periodically with the elements’ atomic
number (Now the periodic table is set up by increasing atomic number)
Family/Group –(8) columns of the periodic table; elements are similar in same family
Period- (7) rows of the periodic table; elements are NOT similar in same period
Most of the elements are classified as metals.
Properties of elements change as you go across a period.
Alkali Metals I- most reactive metals
Alkaline Earth Metals II- not as reactive as Alkali Metals
Halogens (VII)- most reactive non-metals; “salt formers”
Noble Gases (VIII)- colorless, odorless gases; unreactive because they have a full outer
shell of electrons
Rare-Earth Elements- at bottom of periodic table; most are man-made and some
radioactive
The element hydrogen is like the “black sheep”; it does not fit in with any family.
Aluminum is the most abundant metal.
Carbon is found in all living things.
Air is 80% Nitrogen.
The family/group # tells the # of electrons on the outer shell of an atom.
