Chapter 19:Developmental
Biology
Review: Ch 13 Draw the Lac Operon. Include the LacI, Z, Y, and A. What do each transcribe? Where are the
LacP and O? Where does the Lac repressor and allolactose attach? What kind of transcriptional regulation is the
lac operon?
Chapter 19: Developmental genetics
List 4 ways cells respond to positional information. Give an example of apoptosis in plants.
Name two main molecular mechanisms use to communicate positional information
How does bicoid accumulate in the anterior region of the oocyte? (Figure 1.9 is helpful) What would you expect
to be the phenotype of a larva in which the bicoid gene was expressed in both the anterior region and the
posterior region of the oocyte?
What are homeotic genes? The colinearity rule? Give an example of homeotic mutation
What phenotype would you expect if the Antp gene was expresses where abd-A is supposed to be expressed?
(See figure 19.13)

If you observed fruit flies with the following developmental abnormalities, would you guess that a mutation has
occurred in a segmentation gene or a homeotic gene?
A) three abdominal segments were missing
B) one abdominal segment had legs
What group of proteins play a key role in controlling the program of developmental changes?
Morphogens are….
The homeotic genes in Drosophila
a. Determine the structural and functional characteristics of different segments of the developing fly
b. Encode motor proteins that transport morphogens throughout the embryo
c. Are dispersed apparently randomly throughout the gene
d. Are expressed in similar levels in all parts of the developing embryo
e. Both a and c
Which of the following genes do not play a role in the process whereby segments are formed in the fruit fly
embryo?
a. Homeotic genes
b. Gap genes
c. Pair rule genes
d. Segment polarity genes
e. All of the above play a role in segmentation
Give examples of the following
Totipotent
Pluripotent
Multipotent
Unipotent
