ENGLISH I MIDYEAR REVIEW
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When is the midyear?
Either Wednesday, January 21st or Thursday, January 22nd
How much does it count?
 Your midyear is a cumulative exam; in other words, it is a test of everything we have done since SEPTEMBER 2014.
 Your midterm exam will be factored in as 20% of your semester 1 grade. Your semester 1 grade will also include term 1(40%) and term
2(40%).
 Your semester 1 grade will be the basis for your course recommendation for next year. (You need a 90% semester 1 average to move up
to Honors).
What do I need to know?

THE ESSAY SECTION: 1 Essay

Perform a close and active reading of a new short story
and respond to the characters, conflicts and/or themes
in the story.
You will be required to integrate QUOTATIONS from the
story into your essay.
As you read the story, you should do the following:
1. Actively read: Make connections, formulate
evaluations, and ask questions.
2. Notes/Mark up: If it will help you, underline or
circle important information about characterization
and conflicts. Pay attention to the narrator, his
perspective and the influence of point of view on the
story.
3. Think about the characters and how they change
throughout the story: Remember the elements of
characterization (Descriptions, Dialogue, Actions,
Thoughts)
4. Think about potential theme(s) of the story.
Overall, what seems to be the message and purpose of
this story?

If you have honestly completed all of your
homework and class work to the best of your
ability and with full effort, then you have
prepared for this section.
This section of the exam will assess your reading
comprehension and your ability to write about
literature—particularly new literature— in a
thoughtful and accurate manner.
