Body System Vocabulary
TERM
DEFINITION
Absorption
The process of taking in monomers and other nutrients produced during digestion into
the body for the use by cells
Antibody
Proteins that have specific bonding sites for certain antigens that have been identified
previously in the body
Circulatory System
The body system that circulates blood and delivers materials throughout the body
Digestion
The process of breaking down polymers from food into their small units for the
purpose of nutrient absorption
Digestive System
The body system that processes food and turns it into energy for the organism
Endocrine system
The body system that consists of glands which regulates the body activities
Epidermis
The outermost layer of cells that make up the skin
Excretion
The act of getting rid of wastes
Excretory System
The body system that gets rid of cellular waste
Gamete
sex cells; contain half the total number chromosomes for an organism;
Hydrolysis
The chemical process in which water molecules are added to break the bonds of a
polymer
Immune System
A system of specialized cells, tissues, and processes that protect an organism
against pathogens
Integumentary System
The body system that protects the body by covering it (skin)
Interdependence
The act of multiple body systems working together to establish various tasks
Lymph System
The body system that removes waste, pathogens, and dead blood cells; absorbs fat
and fat soluble vitamins and delivers them to cells for use
Muscular System
The body system that allows the body to move
Nervous System
The body system that allows the body to respond to stimuli
Neuron
A cell that makes up the nervous system (brain/nerve cell)
Organ
A group of tissues that perform certain functions
Ovary
A female reproductive organ that contains eggs and releases certain hormones
Pancreas
A gland that helps digest food by secreting enzymes into the small intestine
Pathogen
Anything capable of causing infectious disease
Reproductive System
The body system that allows organisms to produce offspring
Respiration
The process of gas exchange
Respiratory System
The body system that allows organisms to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with
their environment
Response
An action that is prompted by a stimulus
Skeletal System
The body system that supports and protects the body by providing it with a framework
Stimuli
Anything that prompts a response or action
