FAMOUS PEOPLE AND IDEAS OF THE
SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION

Alchemy: Early form of medieval “scientist” that tried to change everyday
chemicals into gold.
Scientific method: Find a problem, gather data, form a hypothesis, test the
hypothesis using experiment.
Scientific Instruments: Instruments invented to measure or observe nature closely
such as the telescope, microscope, thermometer, and barometer.
Arabic numerals: Came into use instead of Roman numerals to make doing math
easier.
Heliocentric universe: Sun centered solar system that planets revolve around
Geocentric universe: Earth was the center of the UNIVERSE and everything
went around it.
Isaac Newton: English scientist who discovered the basic laws of motion, how
gravity worked, the properties of light, invented calculus, and invented the
refracting telescope.
Galileo Galilei: He was the first to use a telescope to observe space, discovered
the moons of Jupiter, invented a good telescope, discovered the moon had “seas”,
discovered sunspots, and proved all physical objects fall at the same rate.
Nicolaus Copernicus: He proved the earth was not the center of the universe but
the sun was the center of the solar system.
William Harvey: He learned how the human bodies circulatory system works
Andreas Vesalius: He made detailed drawings of how the human body is
constructed
Anton von Leeuwenhoek: One of the first to use a microscope to see small
things.
Francis Bacon: He helped invent the scientific method.
Rene Descartes: He helped invent the scientific method.
