Propaganda – Widespread promotion of ideas, usually seen in
advertising. Propaganda spreads ideas that get people to act on
their emotions instead of thinking it out. Propaganda uses bias.
Propaganda also uses symbols.
Bias – Leaning toward a favorite.
Example: You love your teacher. If she ran for president, you
would be biased to vote for her. (Being biased means she’s your
favorite, not just because she is a good candidate for president, but
because you already love her as a person.)
Symbol – Something that stands for something else.
Example: The eagle is a symbol for America.
Types of Propaganda:
1. Bandwagon effect – suggests that everybody feels the same way
about something, and you should feel that way, too.
Example: Drink diet drinks. All the cool people do.
2. Transfer technique – a good or bad idea is attached to a product.
This can use a famous person to sell the idea.
Example: NBA player tells kids to grow big and strong like him
by drinking milk.
3. Stereotyping – Uses a fixed notion of a group that is not true.
Example: The only thing that kids today want to do is watch
television and play mindless video games!
