Introductory Sentences
The Question:
 What was it about Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party that captivated audiences and won them
over so effectively?
 What’s G?
 Who is Banksy?
 Out of a list composed of the ten most pressing problems facing humanity today, where
would you rank the threat of global warming?
 Hitler’s speeches were at the heart of Nazi success in the manipulation of the German people,
including the intellectuals. But what in Hitler’s speeches manipulated so many?
 What do the likes of Barack Obama, Slobodan Miloševic, Ron Paul, Osama Bin Laden, Coca
Cola, and the incredible whitening power of Colgate Plus all have in common? They have
each in their own way utilized the Internet as an instrument of persuasion and propaganda.
 In what ways does television in modern day society distort women’s image?
 Do movies influence the way people think and act?
The Anecdote or Easing into the Topic:
 Growing up, I was a big fan of cartoons such as Looney Tunes, Popeye, and Merrie
Melodies.
 When one hears the term “propaganda” used today, it brings to mind flattering posters of
military dictators plastered over a decaying city or the legendary iron eagles and swastikas of
Nazi Germany.
 November 15, 2004, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell announces his resignation from the
cabinet of George W. Bush. The very next day, a much anticipated first-person shooter by
the name of Half Life 2 is released in North America by the Valve Corporation. As a
fourteen-year-old freshman in high school, which story reached my ears first?
 I have always been curious about how politicians get average citizens to follow their whims
when the merits of these politicians’ ideas are questionable at best.
 Advertisements are part of everyday life in America.
 Nearly everyone’s childhood is shaped by what he or she reads.
The Quote:
 “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” is a famous quote from former president
Franklin D. Roosevelt. The previous president, George W. Bush, seemed to transform this
statement to “the only thing you have to fear is not enough fear” (Hijacking Pt. 3).
 “It doesn’t matter whether you’re black, or white, or Hispanic, or Chinese…as long as you
believe in Jesus!”
 Adolf Hitler once said, “Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can
be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way around, to consider the most wretched
sort of life as paradise.”

The Straightforward Topic:
 China and Germany have both been notoriously represented by individual leaders—Mao in
China and Hitler in Nazi Germany.

thousands of discontented people have voiced their complaints regarding the program’s

 My research paper will focus on how propaganda in the United States during World War II
recruited women to the workforce.

accomplished during Nazi control over Germany.
