We begin to wander from God by growing indifferent to Him. We find our heart easily seduced by other affections. (Hebrews 3:13; 5:11; James 5:19; Proverbs 4:23; 2 Corinthians 11:3) When King David broke that bond of intimacy with God through his liaison with Bathsheba, rationalization and self-deception became a way of life. (Psalm 32) Monday 15 Sept Pss 105:23-45 (am) 106:1-24 (pm); Job 40:1-24; Acts 15:36-16:5; Jn 11:55-12:8 09:30: Morning Prayer 10:30: Staff Meeting 19:00: Parish Council Meeting B/Day: Wonder Chikanya Family: Lee – Danielle, Tyla, Tatum-Rae Prayer: In David's prayer of repentance, he implored God for three attitudes of the heart (Psalm 51), "Renew a steadfast spirit within me." (Verse 10) – That is, he prayed that his broken relationship with God would be repaired. Rebuilt. He asked God for a spirit of stability, faithfulness, and firmness as he sought to be re-established in his walk. Tuesday 16 Sept Pss 106:25-50 (am) 107:1-22 (pm); Job 41:1-11; Acts 16:6-15; Jn 12:9-19 19:00: Salvation Prayers & Music Practice Family: Lehutjo – Sarah Prayer: "Grant me a willing spirit." (Verse 12) – By this request, David was appealing to God to uphold, or sustain him in his spirit. He may also have been asking God for a renewed spirit of nobility. You may recall that David, after 15 years of eluding King Saul's murderous pursuits, was crowned King of Israel. Once his position as monarch was established, he inquired if there were any good he could do for Saul's family. Aids brought Saul's crippled son Mephibosheth to his attention. And in response, David offered to provide for his material needs which included sitting regularly at his table. Now, that is a noble spirit! (2 Samuel 9) Wednesday 17 Sept Pss 107:23-43 (am) 108, 109 (pm); Job 42:1-17; Acts 16:16-24; Jn 12:20-26 09:30: Holy Eucharist 1 Cor 12:31-13:13; Ps 33:1-12; Lk 7:31-35 B/Day: David Crosthwaite Family: Lund – Keith Parish Secretary: Postal Address: Tel: Moyra Mummery (08:00 – 13:00) P. O. Box 585, Ferndale, 2160 011 787-6964 and 011 886-7040 Prayer: "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit." (Verse 17) – Here, David acknowledged the importance of a crushed spirit in repentance. When we began to grasp the cost Jesus paid for our redemption, we will find no place for a cavalier or "oops" attitude in our confession. Rather, we will be crushed over our sin. Perhaps today, our prayer could be, "Lord, grant me a steadfast, willing and broken spirit." Thursday 18 Sept Pss 110, 111, 112 (am) 113, 114 (pm); Job 28:1-28; Acts 16:25-40; Jn 12:27-36a Family: Lupini – Dante, Janice, Francesca Prayer: Are You Living A Life Of True Significance? H. L. Mencken sardonically stated, "The problem with life is not that it's a tragedy, but that it's a bore." King Solomon echoes Mencken's cynicism in declaring, "For what does a man get for all his toil and for all his heart's striving with which he wearies himself… For all his days are full of pain and his task vexations… even at night his mind has no rest. This also is emptiness." (Ecclesiastes 2:22, 23 – Berkeley Translation) We too may have fame, success, pleasure… perhaps even a measure of fulfilment. But the question we must ask of ourselves is, "From God's perspective, am I living a life of true significance?" Friday 19 Sept Pss 115 (am) 116, 117 (pm); Est 1:1-4, 10-19; Acts 17:1-15; Jn 12:36b-43 Family: Maema – Lerato, Moeketsi Prayer: The following questions may prove helpful in assessing that penetrating inquiry: 1. What is my unique role in God's greater plan? (Romans 12:3-6a; 1 Corinthians 12:1-4) 2. What eternal legacy will I leave behind? (1 Corinthians 3:10-15; 2 Peter 3:10-14) 3. What will it take for me to finish well? (1 Corinthians 9:24-27; 15:58; Philippians 3:17-19) 4. How can I leverage my life for maximum contribution to my fellow man and for the Kingdom of God? (Proverbs 4:18; Matthew 5:14-30) 5. Am I clear in knowing how to get from where I am to where I want to go in life? (Proverbs 17:24; Ephesians 5:14 -17) "Only one life will soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last." Saturday 20 Sept Pss 118 (am) 119:1-24 (pm); Est 2:5-8, 15-23; Acts 17:16-34; Jn 12:44-50 08:30: MSM, Sophiatown B/Day: Olothando Chitungo Family: Mahatlane - Lawrence Prayer: Humility is a virtue more often praised than sought. Who wants to think little of himself? The world admires the self-confident, the ambitious, yes, even the proud! Yet biblical humility – recognizing oneself as a sinner before the holy God – is a prerequisite for starting down the path to revival. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." A WEB Church (Welcome, Encourage, Build) “For we know, brothers loved by God, that He has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.” (1 Thessalonians 1:4–7) Dictionary definition of web: “A network of fine threads constructed by a spider from fluid secreted by its spinnerets, used to catch its prey.” WELCOME: A section on acceptance begins at Romans 14:1 and ends at Romans 15:7 with the words, “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” Read Luke 15:11-32 – note the acceptance of the father and the attitude of the older brother Read Acts 10:44–48; 11:15–18) – God’s acceptance of the Gentiles by the giving of the Holy Spirit What are the things that make it difficult for us to accept others at church and in our group? What can we do to grow in accepting one another and become even more welcoming as church? ENCOURAGE: Acts 11:22-24 – Barnabas encouraged the church at Antioch 1 Thessalonians 3:2 – Timothy was sent to “strengthen and encourage” the Thessalonians in their faith Paul encourages the use of certain gifts in Romans 12 and among them writes, “if it is encouraging, let him encourage” 1 Thessalonians 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” Share how you have been encouraged in your faith by someone else. How can we be of greater encouragement to one another in our group and in church? BUILD: Paul writes, “Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” (Romans 14:19) Literally this means “Let us keep on pursuing” to do what leads to peace (“the things of peace” and to mutual edification (“and the things of building up one another”) Building involves helping others grow Consider some of the ways in which we can help one another grow in Christ “We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please his neighbour for his good, to build him up. For even Christ did not please Himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” (Romans 15:1-4)
