The University of Wisconsin-Stout Student Health Services (SHS) is providing you with this fact sheet in
order to provide best practice guidance for medical treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder. (ADD)
The diagnosis of ADD is made by a qualified medical professional. The SHS requires that the proof of
this diagnosis be submitted for review and inclusion in your medical record before ongoing prescriptions
of ADD medications can be provided. The physicians and nurse practitioners at the SHE do not diagnose
ADD, but can assist with the treatment. A list of some local professionals who provide evaluations and
diagnosis of ADD is available at the SHS.
Many treatments for ADD involve taking prescription medication as part of the treatment plan. It is very
important that you take your medication as prescribed.
ADD medications:

are usually Schedule II controlled substances that have legally mandated special pharmacy and
prescriber restrictions. These include no refills, no more than a one month supply, and no verbal
or call in orders. There are also time and date restrictions on how long the prescription is valid
after written and how soon the next month’s prescription can be filled.

can only be prescribed for specific medically approved diagnoses.

have a high abuse potential.

are not to be mixed with alcohol or illicit drugs.

are illegal to sell or share with others.

are to be stored in a safe and secure manner to prevent loss or theft.

are to be taken only as directed.
Failure to follow these guidelines will result in the denial of future medication prescriptions for
ADD treatment through SHS.
