Creating Impressions
Impression:
An image that forms quickly in the minds of others
 Verbal communication accounts for 20% of an impression
 The other 80% is non-verbal, including:
 Body language
 posture, eye contact, facial expression, arm and leg position
 Space
 distance between speakers
 Touch
 Intimacy, gender, frequency
 Voice
 Tone, volume, modulation
 Appearance
 Combination of clothes, grooming and health
Stereotypes:
A simplified and standardized image of a person or group
 Advantages:
 Can help us identify people or dangers quickly
 Disadvantages:
 Often misleading and can lead to judging/dismissing others based on
appearance
 Can limit people’s view of themselves and their capabilties
Examples of stereotypes:
Unusual hairstyle on a teen = rebel
Letter sweater = jock

Personality

 Personality influences the clothing styles you prefer

 Affect clothing choices
 Happy and cheerful = bright colours
 Feeling down = shapeless, dark or grey colours
Self-Concept
 The image you have of yourself
 A warm smile and firm handshake = positive self-concept
 Slouching, little attention to appearance = negative self-concept
Conformity
 Going along with the standards, attitudes or behaviours of a group
 Can bring a sense of identity, belonging and security
Peer Pressure
 The peer group’s push to conform
 Can have positive, or negative effects
 Positive: Conform to school and community customs or new job
 Negative: name-calling, labeling, exclusion
