1. On page 2 (pg. 14), read the entire paragraph that begins, “But a very brief
consideration of the ways of uncivilized peoples…”
a. How did ancient man view the world?
b. What was their only defense to their view of the world?
2. On page 3 (pg. 14), read the top paragraph that begins, “Of course the Greeks too
had their roots in the primeval slime.”
a. How do Greek myths demonstrate a similarity and difference between
themselves and primitive man?
3. On page 3 (pg. 14), what does the phrase, “the Greek miracle” try to express?
4. Begin reading on the top of page 5 (middle of the 1st full paragraph on pg. 16)
(“With the coming forward of Greece...”) until you get to the end of the first

b. Make a 3-column T chart that lists the characteristics of how gods were portrayed
in Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Greek culture.
5. Begin on page 5 (pg. 16) with the last paragraph that reads, “Saint Paul said…”
and read until the bottom of page 6 (pg. 17), “…and it made gods
companionable.”
a. Consider ancient Greek artwork. In what image did the Greeks create their
gods?
b. Aside from their physical representation, what else did the Greeks give their gods
to make them “companionable”?
c. How do the traits the Greeks gave their gods support the idea of the “Greek
miracle”?
6. Read the only complete paragraph on page 7 (pg. 17) (“That is the
miracle...returns to nowhere”).
a. What exactly is the "miracle of Greek mythology"?
b. Why did the characters of Greek mythology have ties to familiar locales?
7. Read the complete paragraph on page 10 (pg. 19) (“Greek mythology...”).
a. What are the 2 main purposes of mythology? How does it achieve these
purposes?
8. Begin on page 12 (pg. 20) with the paragraph that reads, “So back to the story of
amorous Zeus….”
a. How does the changing nature of the gods, and man’s relationship to them,
reflect man’s changing perception of himself?
