The Senate
The United States government is made up of three branches.
The three branches are the legislative branch, the executive
branch and the judicial branch.
The legislative branch makes the federal laws of the United
States. The legislative branch is also called Congress.
Congress has two houses, the House of Representatives
and the Senate. Congress meets in the Capitol Building in
Washington, D.C.
The Senate has 100 seats. There are 50 states in America.
Each state has 2 senators. There are 100 senators in the
United States.
North Carolina has two senators. John Edwards and
Elizabeth Dole are the current senators of North Carolina.
Each senator is elected for 6 years. There is no limit to how
many times a senator can be reelected. The citizens of the
United States elect the senators.
