Health Skills
The three points on the Health Triangle represent physical health, mental-emotional health, and
family-social health.
The passing of characteristics or traits from biological parents to their children is called heredity.
Media might influence choices you make about healthful behaviors.

A press release from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would be a good source of
information about a specific health product or service.
Influence is the ability to sway an opinion, a choice, or an outcome.
When you communicate with someone without using language, you are using nonverbal
communication.
Peer pressure can be positive as well.
Resistance skills are skills that help a person say “no” to an action or to leave a dangerous
situation.
People with passive behavior lack self-confidence and do not stand up for themselves.
A mediator is an outside person who helps two parties agree on a solution to a conflict.
An adverse judgment formed without looking at facts is prejudice.
A reactive decision-maker allows others to make decisions , while a proactive decision-maker
takes control over his or her decisions.
Restitution is making up for loss, harm, or damage you have caused.
A health advocate is a person who uses skills to influence the health behavior and decisions of
others.
Beta-endorphins are substances produced in the brain that create a feeling of well-being.
An example of an I-message is “I feel that I can’t trust you when you lie about your drug use, and
this hurts me.”
A person has worked through a life crisis when he or she accepts what has happened, adjusts and
bounces back.
An I-message can help you express emotion in a non-judgmental way.
You could improve your social-emotional environment by avoiding contact with people who put
you down.
Mental Health
Warning signs of suicide include making a direct statement about killing oneself, such as “I wish I
was never born.”
Someone who has experienced life changes, seems tired all the time, has lost weight, and has
trouble concentration on schoolwork, may be experiencing depression.
Mood disorders include major depression.
People relapse when they return to a previous behavior or condition.
People with codependence neglect themselves to try to fix other people’s problems.
People with mental disorders can be helped with formal intervention, medications, and therapy.
A standard or belief is called a value.
Self-respect is regard for oneself because of responsible actions.

Minerals are nutrients that regulate many chemical reactions in the body.
Water is a nutrient that is involved with all body processes.
