CopyMate
Connections/Switch Setting V1-2
CopyMate assumes that the Copier has Electromechanical Counting Meters. Copy Count Meter input connections are
made in Parallel with the meter within the copier. This pair of wires can be connected either way round and can be used
with Meter circuits ranging from 6V to 24V (other voltages with some modification, contact your supplier for details). When
using CopyMate with Copy Count Meters of 16V or above, then snip resistor R2 out of circuit. It is located near to the big
chip. The Out of Paper” relay connections depend upon the way the out of paper switch is connected in the copier. If the
out of paper switch goes open circuit, when the door is open, then use COM and NO connections in series with the
existing out of paper switch. If the out of paper switch is closed circuit when the copier is out of paper, then use COM and
NC connections in Parallel with the switch.
Two versions of Firmware are available for CopyMate. Low Value Mode (for B/W copiers) and High Value Mode (for
Colour Copiers) please make sure you have the correct Firmware and correctly programmed Coin Validator for the Mode
you intend to use.
Use a 12V Electromechanical Counting Meter (preferably without protection Diode) for the “Audit” Meter
Please ensure to use a fully earthed 240V AC Mains Supply. (120V operation is possible contact your supplier for details)
Pin 1 on all Green connectors is nearest the black relay.

Some models of Photocopier have a “Meter Sense” circuit, which passes a permanent, small voltage through the Meter in
the copier, to sense if the Meter has been disconnected. This voltage will be seen by CopyMate, as a valid Meter Pulse
and will Inhibit acceptance of Coins, by the Coin Validator. For CopyMate to “ignore” this voltage, but still “see” a valid
meter pulse then some experimentation will need to be done, to see what this “stand-by” voltage is. Please use an
accurate MultiMeter to measure this voltage and select a resistor value from the following. 1V = 2K7, 2V = 4K7, 5V = 10K.
Remove both R1 and R2 from the CopyMate PCB and replace one of them with the value listed.
CopyMate
Principle Of Operation V1-2
Connections to CopyMate are as follows. Mains power, connection to Coin Mechanism,
connection to Copy Count Meter in the Photocopier and a Connection in series with the “Out of
Paper” switch of the Copier.
After power up, the coin mechanism is switched on (and the reject button lamp) and the
CopyMate waits for Coin/s to be accepted. The customer inserts coins and once enough money
has been inserted and the vend price is reached. CopyMate switches on the Photocopier and
waits for the Photocopiers Copy Count meter to be pulsed. Once it sees this signal, it then either
switches off further copies being made straight away or waits a while (depending upon switch
settings) for the copier to finish its copy cycle, it does this by way of breaking the circuit to the Out
of Paper switch sensor on the Paper Tray. After switching the copier off, it pulses the Audit Meter
connected to CopyMate. This will be in 1p units when operating in Low Value Vend mode or 10p
units when working in High Value Vend mode. If the price of each copy is set at 6p for example,
and the customer has inserted 10p then the balance of 4p is held in memory (until CopyMate is
switched off), so if the customer were to insert another 2p, then he/she would be able to make
another copy. In another scenario, if the customer were to insert a 20p, he/she would be allowed
to make 3 copies in a row, before CopyMate switched off the photocopier. This would leave a
balance of 2p in memory, so if he/she inserted another 4p, they could make another copy. As
said before any balances left after a transaction, will be held in memory, until CopyMate is
powered down. CopyMate audits all of the money taken, and not the amount of Photocopies
Price of Copies
The price of the value of each copy is set with the aid of the on-board DIP Switches (we will call
this the POV). The switches set the POV in 1p or 10p increments (depending upon which
Firmware is fitted), ether in Low or High value vend mode, and the attached Switch Setting chart
will tell you which switches you need to make for the intended POV.
Machine Turn Off Delay
Because some makes of Photocopier pulse the machines internal “Copy Count” meter before the
Copier has finished its copy cycle, and others pulse this meter at the very end of the cycle, we
need to add a delay after this Meter has been pulsed before we switch off the copier function.
Mars Coin Mechanism (Coin Maps)
Two different versions of The Mars Cashflow Coin Mechanism maybe used with the CopyMate
Controller. The first version is for when the CopyMate is going to be used with low value
transactions. 1p – 63p per copy. This version will operate the mechanism in BCO mode, and
must be programmed with the “CopyMate Low-Value Mode” coin map. Mars Coin Mechanisms
are available from Brent Electronic on 020 8324 6102, make sure to ask for the correct coin map.
The second version is for when CopyMate is used on high value transactions 10p - £6.30 (in 10p
increments). This version will operate in Parallel mode, and must be programmed with the
“CopyMate High-Value Mode” coin map.
