DNA Model Introduction
Name:__________________
Date:
Objective: Build a realistic model of a nucleotide, the building block of DNA. These
nucleotides must be able to link together to form a larger DNA model
Materials: The only restriction is that you cannot use food items. Models built with food
create problems with ants and other pests and they do not last very long.
Model Requirements:
1. Must be sturdy enough that it will not break when handled. Ideally, I should
be able to use your model as an example for next year’s class. And the next
year’s class…and the next year’s…and the next year’s.
2. Must have a legend which clearly labels and explains all of the parts of your
model. Try to use actual pieces on your legend rather than drawings.
3. Must be an accurate portrayal of a nucleotide (phosphate, sugar, and
nitrogenous base, and the appropriate number of hydrogen bonds). These
nucleotides need to be able to link together to form the backbone of DNA.
The nitrogenous bases must be able to link together so that we can form the
familiar double helix structure of DNA.
Criteria
Points earned
Accuracy – Does each nucleotide contain a phosphate and
sugar molecule? Does each nucleotide contain a nitrogenous
base? Are the base pairs correctly paired together? Do you
have the correct number of bonds between different base pairs?
Have you clearly shown the double helix shape?
/15
Creativity – original use of materials, visually pleasing and
/15
interesting to look at
Quality of Construction – Does your project fall apart
/15
when handled? Could I keep your project and use it as an
example for the next five years?
Legend – ALL parts are clearly labeled and there is NO
/15
doubt about what each base is, where the sugars and phosphates
are, where the bonds are, etc
