THREE TYPES OF IRONY; ARISTOTLE’S PERSUASION:
I.
Irony-3 types: verbal, dramatic, situational
A.Verbal – (sarcasm)words suggest opposite of
what is meant
B. Dramatic – Na-na-na-na-na, we know
something the character doesn’t!
C.Situational irony – We didn’t see that one
coming! -unexpected event occurs
II. Aristotle’s definitions of persuasion
A.Ethos – persuade by reputation – I
respect/trust the speaker as having integrity,
so I’m persuaded by the message
B. Pathos – emotional appeal used to persuade,
arouses pity
C.Logos – use of reasoning to persuade (logic)
III. Stoic – the person free from passion and
emotion. Calmly accepts occurrences as the
unavoidable result of divine will
