Test #2 (1.6, 1.7, 10.1 – 10.3, 2.1, 2.2 )
SPRING 2011
This test has 8 questions (some with multiple parts). Each question will be graded out of 10 points.
CALCULATORS THAT ARE EXEPTABLE PER YOUR SYLLABUS ARE ALLOWED (but you must show your work)!
NO SCRATCH PAPER!!!!
For Questions 1 and 2 (each worth 10 points apiece but each with parts), you will be given two graphs.
One for y  f  x  and one for y  g  x  . You will then be asked several questions about each graph.
Question 1: 1.6 Be sure that you know how to communicate the intervals upon which a function is increasing or decreasing. Know
how to look at the two graphs and be able to determine such things as  f  g  2 or  g  f 3 or  g f 3 .
Question 2: 1.7 Also be able to explain HOW you would alter the graph of y  f  x  in order to graph a couple of “transformation
and/or reflection” of the graph (like y  f   x   3 for example). You will NOT be asked to actually graph the “transformation and/or
reflection”, just to explain HOW you would shift the original graph to obtain the graph of the new one. Write your answer with the
steps in the order that you would do them. Remember that some problems had to be rewritten first.
Question 3: 10.1 stuff…multiple parts. Be able to write sigma notation given a series of terms (or vice versa). Be able to work with
“recursively defined” sequences.
Question 4: 10.2 Arithmetic sequences…multiple parts. For example, be able to find d , a1 , a10 , S10 when given a few terms in
an arithmetic sequence. Be sure that you know HOW to use the two formulas we worked with in this section.
Question 5: 10.3 Geometric Sequences…multiple parts. For example, given a few terms in a geometric sequence be able to find
a10 , S10 , S . Be sure you know all three formulas that we dealt with in this section.
Question 6: 2.1 One problem, solving a linear equation. Remember the steps we outlined in our notes!
Question 7: 2.1 One problem. Solve a literal equation (formula).
Question 8: 2.2 Simplify a complex number expression writing your answer in the form a + bi
(Can you multiply and “divide” complex numbers….conjugate?)
