Conduct live dissection of animal heart obtained from local butcher shop. The teacher will dissect heart lengthwise to expose as many chambers of the heart as possible. The students draw/record their observations. Teacher will guide discovery of upper and lower chambers of the heart in addition to the blood vessels. The students will utilize the computer to watch an online video about the circulatory system which is available from www.kidshelath.org. After viewing the video, The students will complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the information from the video with their own observations. Auditory Using the Smartboard, the teacher will display a video demonstrating an Echocardiogram from youtube entitled Tests and Procedures:Echocardiogram from CardioSmart. The students will view and listen to the cardiologist explain the test. The teacher will post an article about heart murmurs on the Smartboard and the students will listen to someone reading the article. The teacher will The teacher will facilitate a readers workshop of the text: The Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Heart ( the entire book will take several days to complete, the teacher has already determined stopping points) The teacher will begin the lesson by having the students participate Students can select one of the following options: listen to the “Heart Song” on the MP3 player or visit the computer to listen to the National Geographic Video entitled “Mysteries of Life with Tim and Moby.” After completing their chosen option, the students will create their own lyrics to Auditory-continued Kinesthetic explain to the group that they will select a partner to discuss the information learned from these two sources. The teacher will ask for volunteers to present their discussion. The teacher will facilitate the completion of a Venn diagram to display the results of each partnerships discussions. in the NUA strategy of Dancing Definitions. Dancing Definitions is a strategy in which the teacher displays the key vocabulary words and the students discuss the definition and create an action, a performance, or a song to represent the word. use in a song/rap that they will create and perform. Discuss the term heart rate and model how to calculate heart rate. After modeling, the teacher will facilitate guided practice by having the students work in partners. Each pair will calculate each other heart rate during various activities (running, walking, jumping, sitting, etc) The pairs will record the data collected on a graph. Review “heart healthy” foods. Divide the group into two teams to play the Heart Healthy Family Feud. One representative from each team will come to the front of the room. The teacher reads a statement/question from the heart healthy card stack. The student who thinks he/she knows the answer can ring the appropriate team bell and provide the answer to the teacher. If no one answers, correctly, the original participants can tag a teammate for assistance. The team with the most healthy heart points wins. Create a clay model of the heart using modeling clay. Students can use any classroom resources (displays, their own notes, observations, etc.) to create their model. The students will label the components of their model to demonstrate their understanding of the heart. Time for rotation: 45 minutes/ person responsible for rotations: T. Martorella
