Mineral- a naturally occurring, nonliving solid that has a specific chemical makeup and a
repeating structure (p. 264).
Streak- the color of the powder left behind when you rub a mineral against a rough white tile or
a streak plate (p. 265).
Luster- the way a mineral’s surface reflects light (p. 265).
Hardness- a mineral’s ability to resist being scratched (p. 266).
Rock- a natural substance made of one or more minerals (p. 274).
Igneous rock- rocks that form when melted rock cools and hardens (p. 274).
Deposition- the process in which sediment settles out of water or is dropped by wind (p. 276).
Sedimentary rock- rocks formed when sediments are cemented together (p. 276).
Metamorphic rock- rocks formed when high heat and great pressure change existing rocks into
a new form (p. 278).
Weathering – the process of wearing away rocks by natural processes (p. 286).
Erosion- the process of moving sediment by wind, moving water, or ice (p. 287).
Rock cycle- the continuous process in which one type of rock changes into another type (p. 288).
