The “Triangular” Trade
A Forced Journey
o Route 1: From Europe to Africa
o Europeans brought goods & guns from Europe to Africa
o Africans accept European goods and then give away their African
enemies they had captured during war because African tribes were
only loyal to their own tribe members
o Europeans also kidnapped Africans from their homes
o Route 2: From Africa to the New World  the “Middle” Passage
o Africans were put on ships and taken to the New World to be
sold/traded
o Trip across the Atlantic Ocean could last 3 or more months
o The “Middle Passage” voyage across the Atlantic Ocean  very
brutal experience
o Africans tightly packed on ships & kept below the decks so that they
couldn’t escape
o Poorly fed, rarely bathed, very poor sanitary conditions
o Many Africans chose to jump overboard to their deaths rather than
endure the journey
o Another 20% died before even reaching the New World from
disease & illnesses
o Slaves arrive in the Caribbean islands where settlers buy them on
the auction block
o Route 3: From the New World to Europe
o Goods from the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies are
shipped back to the Old World
And the cycle of the Triangular Trade starts all over again…
