To all Fire Fighters: You can add me to the list of firemen that have had life threatening conditions uncovered as a result of an annual fire fighter physicals. When following up on the findings by our medical provider, Life Scan, my doctor informed me I have thyroid cancer. It came as quite a shock to me because I was only 39 years old at the time. The good news is that the type of cancer I had, papillary carcinoma, is one of the most curable cancers there is when it is found early. My thyroid was surgically removed followed by radioactive iodine treatment. The diagnosis is a result of follow-up tests performed on a goiter that was found on my thyroid during the ultrasound portion of my Life Scan fire fighter physical. I would like to thank Life Scan, the ultrasound tech, and the rest of the staff for the life saving service that they provide. It would be a tragedy for the JFRD to discontinue our physical exams because it would surely be a death sentence to some unsuspecting public servant and I encourage all fire departments to provide a health and wellness program such as ours to their fire fighters. The stakes are too high for our fire fighters to fall victim to budget cuts. Andrew C. Harrold Fire Captain Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department Jacksonville, Florida
