To all Fire Fighters:
You can add me to the list of firemen that have had life threatening conditions
uncovered as a result of an annual fire fighter physicals. When following up on
the findings by our medical provider, Life Scan, my doctor informed me I have
thyroid cancer. It came as quite a shock to me because I was only 39 years old
at the time. The good news is that the type of cancer I had, papillary carcinoma,
is one of the most curable cancers there is when it is found early. My thyroid
was surgically removed followed by radioactive iodine treatment.
The diagnosis is a result of follow-up tests performed on a goiter that was found
on my thyroid during the ultrasound portion of my Life Scan fire fighter physical.
I would like to thank Life Scan, the ultrasound tech, and the rest of the staff for
the life saving service that they provide.
It would be a tragedy for the JFRD to discontinue our physical exams because it
would surely be a death sentence to some unsuspecting public servant and I
encourage all fire departments to provide a health and wellness program such as
ours to their fire fighters. The stakes are too high for our fire fighters to fall
victim to budget cuts.
