consonant then y
Process Success Criteria

2) Remove y
3) Add ‘ies’
Assessment Focus
Skills
AF8 – Use the correct spelling.
Communication
Introduction – 5 mins
Tell children I have a word in my head and they need to guess it. Show the number of dashes for letters on board and give the
chn one letter. Chn need to guess the letters (like hangman). Word is ‘parties’. Explain that we will be looking at how to make
plurals of words ending in a consonant and y (L..I). Ensure S.C is not revealed at this point.
Odd one out - 5-10 mins
On IWB show chn three ways of spelling a plural of a consonant + y word (one correct, two incorrect). A/B talk: which is the
correct spelling? Chn write down on mini wb’s. Repeat for two other examples.
What’s the rule? - 10 mins
Show chn the word list (singular words on left, plurals on right). A/B talk: chn generate the rule for changing words on left to
words on right. Show chn success criteria which explains the rule. Chn then brainstorm other words on wb’s which the rule
could be applied to. A/B talk: does the rule have any exceptions? Elicit that it doesn’t work for words ending in a vowel + y (e.g.
monkey).
Quiz, quiz, swap, – 10 mins
Provide each child with a word card (plural and singular words from word list). Chn walk around the classroom and ask another
child to spell their word. Their partner does the same. If both partners spell the other word correctly, they swap cards and move
onto to find a new partner. If one/both partners makes a mistake they cannot swap cards, but still go on to find a new partner.
The aim is to swap as many times as possible.

Wordsearch - 10 mins
Show chn word list of singular words. Re-cap how to change these into plurals. Model how to put the plural words into a grid Blank word search grid
and put other letters around them. Chn work in pairs to make their own word searches containing the plural words, and can
extend to include some of their own examples.
Plenary
Ask some chn to share their word searches. (If time, chn can swap with another pair’s work and attempt it).
Discuss ways of remembering the strategy.
