CELL CYCLE MODELING WITH MITOSIS
1. How many different chromosomes does this cell have in G1?
2. Why are there two different colors for each chromosome? (What do they represent?)
3. Observe the parent and daughter cells in this process. Suppose the daughter cells underwent the cell cycle.
Predict what the resulting daughter cells would look like.
4. Define mitosis on the basis of the procedure you followed in this lab.
5. The cells of mice and elephants are about the same size but, overall, the organisms are very different.
Hypothesize how these two organisms differ in the rate of their cell cycles that would explain the difference in
their sizes?
6. What is the difference between cell growth and cell duplication? How does mitosis play a role in the cell
cycle?
7. The body cells of a dog contain 78 chromosomes. If a cell from this dog underwent the cell cycle with
mitosis, how many chromosomes would it have?
8. Human muscle cells and nerve cells seldom divide after they are formed. Explain how this fact might affect
an individual who has received a spinal cord injury?
