Circulatory System
Circulatory System: body’s transport
system. Allows body to move materials
from one place to another, which are carried
in the blood.
Heart: Muscle that acts as the pump for the
circulatory system.
Blood vessels: Tubes that carry blood
throughout the body.
3 types of Blood Vessels:
Arteries: Carry oxygen-rich blood AWAY
from the heart.
Veins: Carry oxygen-poor blood TOWARD
the heart.
Capillaries: very tiny branches of arteries
and veins. They connect the smallest
arteries with the smallest veins.
Cholesterol: Waxy, fat-like substance made
in liver & found in certain foods such as
foods from animals. (milk, cheese, meat)
Keeping Your Circulatory System Healthy
1. Eat a balanced diet: prevents clogged
blood vessels & high blood pressure.
2. Avoid Stress: Tension strains the heart
& blood vessels.
3. Try to maintain your ideal weight:
Carrying extra weight puts strain on
your heart.
4. Exercise: Regular activity helps the
heart & circulation.
5. Don’t smoke: Chemicals in smoke
reduce the amount of oxygen your red
blood cells can carry.

Physical inactivity increases the risk of heart
disease. Physical activity fights against
heart disease risk factors by:
1.Reducing blood cholesterol
2. Reducing blood pressure & resting heart
rate, which decreases the workload on
the heart.
3. EXERCISE!!!: Regular activity helps
the heart & circulation.
4.Helps relieve stress.
5. Helps with weight loss.
Effects of Smoking on the Heart

 Smoking damages the heart and blood
vessels.
 Cigarette smoke increases the activity
of blood platelets, which cause blood to
clot.
 Reduces the ability of blood vessels to
dilate (expand) and contract to adjust
blood flow.
 These changes contribute to artery
blockages, which can cause heart attack
or stroke.
Materials Carried in the Blood
(Don’t write)
 Dissolved oxygen from lungs goes
from blood into cells. Cells need oxygen
to get energy from food.
 Dissolved food particles go to cells
to nourish them.
 Blood carries special cells that fight
germs.
 Blood carries hormones, chemicals,
to cells from places in the body where
they are made. Hormones cause cells to
grow or change in some way.
 Dissolved wastes exit cells & are
removed from body.
