Voluntary Muscle:
Skeletal muscle that you purposely move
Involuntary muscle: Smooth or Cardiac muscle that contracts on its own
Organ System: A system of organs that work together to carry out a bodily function
Organ: A group of tissues that work together to carry out a bodily function
Tissue: A group of similar cells that work together to carry out a bodily function
Cell: The building block of the body. The smallest working unit in the body.
Three types of muscle: Smooth, Skeletal, Cardiac
Smooth Muscle: Helps with the digestion of food, reacts slowly and does not tire easily
Skeletal Muscle: Helps with movement, tires and reacts quickly, striated and banded
Cardiac Muscle: Found only in the heart; Reacts quickly. Does not tire out
5 functions of the skeletal system:
1. Support and structure
2. Protects organs
3. Allows movement
4. Synthesizes red and white blood cells
5. To store minerals
Cartilage – A tough tissue that covers the ends of bones and allows flexibility between
bones.
Tendons – A tough tissue that connects muscles to bones
Ligaments – A tough tissue that connects bones to bones
Marrow – The soft tissue in the middle of bones that creates blood cells and stores
minerals. Nutritious and yummy too.
Number of bones in a human – 206
Longest bone in human – femur (thigh bone)
Two nutrients that muscles need to work: Oxygen and Sugar
Function of Blinking: Protection and keeping the eye clean and moist. Mostly
involuntary, but can also be voluntary.
