Follow up to WS meeting of 3rd April 2014: A letter from the WS supporting the planning application for Kennedys has been sent to Southwark Council. Jeremy to follow up on bringing the bike docking station in Wansey Street back into use. Walworth Slots - Peter Stevenson and James Conway have taken up the issue of the opening times for the premises with the Council. We understand that Southwark Council are prosecuting them for breaches of their license terms. 1. Kennington & Walworth Neighbourhood Action Group (KWNAG). Bob Lentell from the KWNAG ran through the issues that the group is working on and in particular the proposed extension to the Northern Line and the problems arising from that such as TfL taking over the lodge in Kennington Park and the likely loss of community activities there (such as BeeUrban), concerns about noise from the underground and the footfall of passengers through the station believed to be rising by up to 800%. The group along with other local groups who are taking action along the length of the Northern line extension are hopeful of hearing the results of the current Planning Enquiry by early autumn 2014. There are also real worries about the high volume of construction traffic expected on surrounding roads and the belief that local residents will be adversely affected. The group is working hard to try and mitigate effects on the local neighbourhood. Jerry thanked the groups and welcomed the involvement of the group in the E&W neighbourhood plan and their keenness to work on a legacy for the work by TfL in the local area for example in relation to green spaces and creating a better overall environment. 2. Doing the Walworth Walk Walworth Heritage Day Saturday 7th June Peter Stevenson updated the meeting on all the work that was going on with the Walworth Heritage Trail. In particular he thanked all the people who'd been researching the individual points along the route. All the information about the trail is currently with Diana to be turned in to pdfs and the postcard invitation is now available. Peter explained the plans for the Heritage Day on Saturday, 7th June. In the morning 1 3. Church Hall – 4 Browning St (Planning Application 14/AP/0707). 4. Coronet Theatre 5. Walworth Road Conservation Area project 6. Venue for future meetings. 7. E&W there would be two guided walks along the Heritage Trail followed by an exhibition of the work that Diana has been doing in St Peter’s over lunch. In the afternoon people would hopefully move on to Burgess Park and events that were going on there. To promote the 7 June day, on Saturday 24th May between 10:30am and 1pm outside Morrison's, the WS would have a table to give out the invitations and help the local community know about the project. There is a planning meeting for the 7 June day next week on 8 May. It was agreed that JL would undertake a risk assessment with the guided walk leaders in order to have considered fully the safety of people participating in the walk. Once completed this would be sent to Southwark Council. Peter Wright said that he was happy to look over the risk assessment and that thought needs to be given to facilities for those with mobility impairment and dangerous traffic locations. A planning application had been made to create seven flats on the site of the church hall in Browning Street. The parish of St John's in Larcom Street say they need to use the funds to refurbish another building they own in Larcom Street for community usage. Suggestions which arose from the discussion at the meeting included the potential for raising funds through conversion rather than demolition of the building, the significance of the building which is felt to be in keeping with other buildings on Browning Street at that point. Jim mentioned concerns about refuse disposal. There was understanding of the church's perspective and their need to raise funds to make a workable building from the two buildings which they owned locally but there was agreement that the society would object on grounds that it may be possible to meet both the needs of the church in terms of the funds it wishes to raise and the local community which does not want to see the loss of another historic building which was noted as being of townscape merit in the Elephant and Castle SPD. If this was of interest to Father John and the church then a meeting would be proposed between the WS and St John’s. Jeremy thanked Sam from the Coronet Theatre for the recent tour of the theatre. David from the Coronet said the theatre was looking for wide local support in terms of identifying the role it could play in the redeveloped E&C area. Sam said that the theatre was keen to host a seasonal event later in the year for local community groups. Jeremy said that he was hopeful that Delancey would come to the June WS meeting to discuss their plans for the regeneration of the shopping centre. Diana said that she was working on getting materials together for the event over lunch on Saturday, 7th June. Panoramics of the eastside and westside of the Walworth Road had now been completed. Lots of information that she has found can currently be seen on the shoebox website the Walworth Peach http://thewalworthpeach.com/ Lend Lease are ending their lease of the Hub as of August 2014 and we will need to find a new venue for meetings from that time on. It was agreed that we would try and move around the Walworth area a little more. Pembroke House have kindly offered some use of their meeting room. As well as this it was suggested that we might approach St Peter’s, the Coronet Theatre, Business Extra and the Pullens. Jerry said that a large number of responses had been made to 2 Neighbourhood Plan 8. Updates Southwark Council. The Neighbourhood Plan group would seek to respond to all of the objections and issues that have been raised once the consultation has ended. The next meeting of the Neighbourhood Plan group is 15 May to be held at Metro Central high. Article 4 Direction - the adverts in Southwark News for an article 4 direction for retail locations in Southwark are aimed at deterring the growth of more betting and payday loan shops. Low-Line. There is growing interest in the low-line idea (walking and cycling and business spaces along the railway viaduct) and we will approach Network Rail in the future about a potential route. Latin Elephant have been successful in their funding bid to Southwark and there will be no need for them to use the WS banking facilities. Manor Place Depot. Consultation on the future of the depot site now appears to be commencing from Notting Hill Housing Trust. Manor Place Terrace. All three options for the future of the Terrace of refurbishment, facade retention and demolition are still being considered but no action is now likely until after the election. Aylesbury Regeneration. Confirmation of the redevelopment of the Aylesbury Estate appeared in the Evening Standard on the evening of the meeting. Date of next meeting: Thursday 5th June 2014 – The Hub 3
