APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY RECREATION Intramural Sports Program INTRAMURAL CO-REC VOLLEYBALL RULES WARNING: YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THIS SPORT COULD RESULT IN PHYSICAL INJURY, WHICH COULD BE SERIOUS OR FATAL! APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR INJURIES RECEIVED DURING INTRAMURAL SPORTS ACTIVITIES. STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF ARE REMINDED THAT INTRAMURAL PARTICIPATION IS COMPLETELY VOLUNTARY. IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT ALL PARTICIPANTS HAVE A PHYSICAL EXAMINATION AND SECURE ADEQUATE MEDICAL INSURANCE PRIOR TO PARTICIPATION. Intramural Co-Rec Volleyball play shall be governed by the National Federation of State High School Association (National Federation) Volleyball Rules. All rules in this packet are exceptions to the National Federation Volleyball Rules. You may checkout a copy of this rulebook from the Intramural Office! REQUIRED OF ALL PARTICIPANTS: A. NO JEWELRY B. NO HARD-BILLED HATS C. NO HARD HAIR CONTROL DEVICES D. NO BANDANNAS E. NO SLEEVELESS SHIRTS UNDER INTRAMURAL JERSEY F. NO KNOTS IN SHIRTS OR JERSEYS G. PROPER SHOES RECOMMENDED OF ALL PARTICIPANTS: A. MOUTHPIECE B. EYE GLASS RESTRAINTS (if applicable) C. PADDED SUPPORT BRACES IF RESULT OF PREVIOUS INJURY OR IF REQUIRED BY DOCTOR D. KNEE PADS AND ELBOW PADS RULE 1 THE GAME START OF GAME A coin toss at the beginning of the match will determine which team receives the choice of first serve or choice of side of court for the first game. The team not serving first in the first game shall serve to start the second game. In the event of a third game of the match, a second coin toss will determine the choice of first serve or side. The teams shall change sides of the court for the second game. Teams shall not change sides of the court in the middle of the third game. GAME TIME Teams not present at the scheduled game time will lose the first game. 15 minutes after the scheduled game time is when game 2 will begin. If the team has not shown up at this time, it will forfeit the match. INTRAMURAL CO-REC VOLLEYBALL RULES – PAGE 2 Section 7 Match Art. 1 A match shall consist of the best 2 out of 3 games. The first team to win 2 games shall be the winner of the match. Scoring will be rally scoring in each of the first 2 games playing to a total of 25 points (no cap) to win the game. The third game shall not be played unless it is necessary to determine the winner of the match. The third game will be rally scoring playing to a total of 15 points (no cap) to win the game. The winning team must win by 2 points in all three games. RULE 2 THE COURT Section 3 Out of Bounds Art. 1 If any part of the ball contacts the boundary lines, it is considered in. Art. 2 Players may not enter another playing court to play the ball. This rule is in effect whether an adjoining court is being occupied or not. RULE 3 GAME EQUIPMENT Section 1 The Net and Markings Art. 4 The height of the net shall be 7 feet 11 5/8 inches high (men’s height). RULE 6 THE TEAM: COMPOSITION AND POSITIONS Section 1 Team Players Art. 1 A team shall consist of four (4) players. A team must have 4 players to start and continue a match. If a team does not have four players to start a game it will result in a forfeit. If a team drops below four players during a match it will result in a default for that team. Art. 2 Any combination of males and females may be used, but at least 1 player of each sex must be on the court at all times. Section 3 Player Positions Art. 1 Males may play in the front row, which includes blocking and attacking at the net. Art. 2 There are no specific rules regarding gender when it comes to the rotation. Two males or females may be next to each other in the rotation or it can alternate between male/female. RULE 8 THE SERVE Section 2 General Art. 1 Teams can serve anywhere along the end line as long as they do not touch or cross the end line until after the ball is contacted. Teams must keep the correct serving order. Art. 2 A served ball that touches the net inside the antennas and continues over the net in bounds into the opponent’s court remains in play. INTRAMURAL CO-REC VOLLEYBALL RULES – PAGE 3 Art. 3 A served ball cannot be blocked or attacked! RULE 9 DURING PLAY Section 4 Contacting the Ball Art. 3 Each team is limited to a maximum of three (3) hits on its side of the net to get the ball successfully over the net. When the team’s first contact is simultaneous contact by opponents or an action to block, the next contact is considered the team’s first hit. Art. 4 Lifting, carrying the ball, and underhand slapping of the ball are illegal hits and shall result in a point or side-out and point. Kicking the ball is an illegal hit. Art. 5 Any combination of contacts by a team is legal. Multiple hits by a team do not have to involve both sexes. Section 6 Net Play Art. 2 A ball may be played from the net provided that a team still has at least one of its three hits remaining. Art. 5 Blocking or attacking a serve is not permitted. Art. 6 Back row players may not jump to attack the ball in front of the attack line. RULE 10 SUBSTITUTES AND SUBSTITUTION Section 3 Substitutes Art. 1 The position of the substitute shall be that of the player replaced without changing the serving order. Art. 2 There will be unlimited substitutions allowed for any player. RULE 11 TIME-OUTS AND INTERMISSION Section 2 General Art. 3 Each team shall be permitted one (1) timeout per game. Timeouts do not carry over from one game to the next. Timeouts will only be granted during a dead ball situation. Time-outs shall not exceed 30 seconds in length. Section 5 Between Games Art. 1 The time period between games of a match shall be no more than 1 minute. MLA 3/07
