Step one Lead in
Step two Fast reading: go through the passage, discuss with your group members and finish the
following tasks
1. Reading strategy: understanding medical terms
(1) Same stem
Eg: pure/ purify
chemical/chemist
bacterium / bacteria / bacterial
(2) Compound words
Eg: heart attack blood sugar best-selling pain-killing
(3) Irregular plural forms
Eg: Bacterium/bacteria medium/ media
2. Finish exercise C1 and C2 on P.20.
Step three Questions collecting
Every student has to raise a question according to your task, and work in groups to choose
the best two or three questions. The speaker of every group then comes to the front to write
down the questions on the blackboard.
