Digestion Learning Goals
Throughout this unit, students will be learning:











To differentiate between the types of tissues and their functions
The level of organization in humans (i.e. cells to organ systems)
An overview of various Organ systems – type, major organs and
functions
The History behind our knowledge of the digestive system
The parts and functions of the digestive system in detail including:
o Mouth and pharynx – taste, teeth, saliva etc…
o Esophagus – peristalsis
o Stomach – glands, enzymes etc…
o Small intestine – digestion and absorption
o Liver – parts, function, secretions
o Pancreas – parts, function, secretions
o Large intestine – absorption
o Villus and microvillus – structure and function
Different types of digestion in humans and other organisms
What Nutrition involves – Macronutrients, micronutrients, and the
special Nutrient (water)
To differentiate between the various Macromolecules in structure and
function – Carbohydrates, Lipids and Protein
The importance of Vitamins and Minerals – differentiate between
them and be familiar with some examples and their functions
