Lysias was born in Athens after his father settled there.
Know that Lysias went to Thurii in the boot of Italy and was trained by one of the
first people to study and teach rhetorical techniques.
Know that the speech by Lysias “Against Eratosthenes” probably took place in 403
BCE after The Thirty oligarchs had been deposed and the Athenian democracy
restored.
Know that Lysias had given the democratic faction support through 200 shields,
2,000 drachmas, recruited 300 soldiers, and persuaded a friend to give the
democrats two talents of silver.
Know that Lysias had been given citizenship after democracy was restored, but
since the Boule hadn’t been meeting to consider the issue the citizenship was later
determined to be unconstitutional.
Know that “Eratosthenes” may have been the only speech Lysias delivered himself
as a citizen.
