Newton’s Laws Lab
NAME
Part I: Newton’s 1st Law (the Law of Inertia (Fnet = 0)
Purpose Statement: Write a short statement about what your goal is in this lab. State Newton’s 1st Law and relate
it to what you did. Mention how this part also relates to frictional forces.
Methods:
Apparatus: Describe the materials you used to do the measurements.
Procedure: Write a (step-by-step) exact procedure of how you collected your data.
Results: Give data measurements – here (picture of your velo vs. time graphs).
Conclusion:
• Discuss your data -> describe the graphs (why are they straight/or not ? – why do they go up or down? – what
forces effect what was on your graphs?). Calculate the frictional F from graphs.
Part II: Newton’s 2nd Law (F = ma (F vs. a with constant mass)
Purpose Statement: Write a short statement about what your goal is in this lab. State Newton’s 2nd Law and relate
it to what you did.
Methods:
Apparatus: Describe the materials you used to do the measurements.
Procedure: Write a (step-by-step) exact procedure of how you collected your data.
Results: Give data measurements – here
• pictures of your velo vs. time graphs (slope = Acceleration) 5
• Data table of your data on your F vs. accel.
• F vs. accel. graph
• any calculations, frictional force from graph.
Conclusion:
• Discuss your data -> describe the graphs (why are the dist graphs curves? – why are velocity graphs straight? –
how did you determine the accel and Forces? - What do their slopes represent? – how did you get the numbers for
your F vs. a graph? – why is that graph a line. – What does the slope & y-intercept of your F vs. acc graph mean?
Compare the force of friction on this graph to the neg accel on your graph in part I, etc. Speak about your
Accuracy/Precision/Error – where did error happen?
Part III: Newton’s 2nd Law (F = ma (m vs. a with constant Force)
Purpose Statement: Write a short statement about what your goal is in this lab.
Methods:
Apparatus: Describe the materials you used to do the measurements.
Procedure: Write a (step-by-step) exact procedure of how you collected your data.
Results: Give data measurements – here
• picture of your velo vs. time graph (Acceleration from the slope)
• Data table of your data (mass, inverse mass, acceleration) on your mass vs. accel. & 1/mass vs. acell graphs.
• any calculations.
Conclusion:
• Discuss your data -> describe the graphs (why is the mass vs. accel graph curved? – what does the straight 1/mass
mean or prove? Does the slope & y-intercept have meaning?, etc. Accuracy/Precision/Error.
