Meeting of June 16, 2006
President – Elect Mike Lyons opened the meeting at 12:15 P.M.
Pledge to the flag. Pres-elect Mike Lyons led the pledge to the flag.
Invocation: Tom Chilcote gave the invocation.
Song: We joined Ted in singing “Your Old Gray Bonnet” and Vinnie suggested we sing, “It’s
Grand Old Flag” in commemoration of Flag Day on June 14th.
4-Way Test: Jean Claude Chabert led the four-way test.

Guests: Mayor Tom Mills welcomed the following guests: Clair St. Yves - Al’s wife, Betty Assef – Ron’s wife,
Tom Mathews, (one of scholarship students) and Patty Irwin – Dick’s wife.
Announcements: Pres.-elect Mike Lyons called on Tom Mathews,
our scholarship student, to tell us about his studies at Dartmouth. Tom
said that he will be attending a summer school session this year called
“Sophomore Summer”, but it is a junior course. Tom is majoring in
Physics and Math, plus is taking Greek Mythology. He hopes to
continue his education through his PHD, at which time he will to decide
to work in academics or for the government in research. We were very
happy to see Tom, and wish him well in his future endeavors.
A Lite Moment With Ron Assef: A priest and a rabbi were sitting next
to each other on an airplane. After a while, the priest turned to the rabbi and asked, "Is it still a requirement of
your faith that you not eat pork?"
The rabbi responded, "Yes, that is still one of our beliefs."
The priest then asked, "Have you ever eaten pork?" to which the rabbi replied,
"Yes, on one occasion I did succumb to temptation and tasted a ham sandwich."
The priest nodded in understanding and went on with his reading.
A while later, the rabbi spoke up and asked the priest, "Father, is it still a requirement of your church that you
remain celibate?"
The priest replied, "Yes, that is still very much a part of our faith."
The rabbi then asked him, "Father, have you ever fallen to the temptations of the flesh?"
The priest replied, "Yes, rabbi, on one occasion I was weak and broke with my faith."
The rabbi nodded understandingly and remained silent, thinking, for about five minutes.
Finally, the rabbi said, "Beats a ham sandwich, doesn't it?"
Schoolhouse: Al St. Yves, with help from Pres.-elect Mike, collected a birthday dollar from Amy. Her sister
was celebrating her 50th birthday. Vinnie was celebrating a birthday and Julie’s daughter was having a
birthday. Betty Assef was happy as they are going to one of their grandchildren’s 8 th grade graduation. Ron
Kennedy had sad dollars because hurricane Alberto dropped buckets of water on Grand Cayman t while he
and Dorie were vacationing. Lennie was happy as he will be going to North Carolina for a few weeks, Ron
Assef happy that Betty is here and happy that he and Betty will be heading North to Canada and won’t be back
until the Fall. Tom Mills was happy, Jean Claude was happy that Monica is back and that he and Marjorie will
be away for a month. Dick happy to be seated next to two lovely ladies, Amy was happy to report on her visits
to two Rotary Clubs – one in Santa Fe, New Mexico and one in Denver, Colorado. Amy said that there were
about 150 members at the Denver luncheon and as the speaker did not show up she and Dan were the
speakers, talking about hurricanes and alligators. Mike was happy, Monica was happy to attend her
granddaughter’s grade 8 graduation. Among the 165 graduates she was No.1 in all of her subjects. Al was
happy to have two lovely at his table, also he and Clair will be going north, and then to Seattle, Wash., down to
L.A. to visit their granddaughter who is a Captain in the Airforce in the Astronaut Program, then they will be
back here before they fly off to Italy.
STOCK REPORT: Julie says she believes that stocks will be coming up again, but it seems that everyone is
waiting to see what the Federal Reserve is going to do about the interest rates.
WEATHER: Mike said that this June has been very dry as June generally is the 2 nd wettest month of the year.
It will continue to be hazy, hot and humid. Sunday should be a good day.
OUR ROTARY FAMILY: Monica did speak with Ray Lawrence, who sends his regards, but continues to need
oxygen.
SPEAKER: Lennie Cottrell was our speaker today. He spoke about Palm Beach Shores and said that the
Shores at one time continued beyond Blue Heron Blvd. He gave us a short history of Lake Park, which was
originally called Kelsey City. Lennie was chief of police of Riviera Beach in the 60’s and early 70’s. He said,
that all the communities had volunteer firemen. There was a restaurant on 13th which served a full breakfast
for 35 cents. The police were given free coffee, but had to pay for anything they had. The post office was on
Blue Heron located in a tent. Our fellow Rotarian, Sandy Bowers, owned several drugstores in the area. Lennie
spoke about some of his experiences as chief of police and of some of the characters that he came into
contact with. He said his motto was always to be honest. Lennie had much more to tell us, but time ran out.
Thanks Lennie for such interesting information.
FIFTY/FIFTY: Ted Salmon, Clair ST. Yves and Ron Assef all had the right numbers, but did not pick the ace
of spades.
TOAST: We joined Mayor Tom Mills in toasting the Rotary Club of the Bahamas and Rotary
International.
