Homework (1-9-11): UNDERSTANDING DENOTATION AND CONNOTATION: All words have denotations, which
are their strict dictionary meanings or definitions. The denotative meaning of blood, for example, is “a red fluid that
circulates through the heart, veins, and arteries of vertebrates.” Many words also have connotations, feelings and
associations that have come to be attached to the words in addition to their strict, literal meanings. The word blood,
for example, is especially rich in connotations. Blood is often associated with thoughts of death, wounds, and pain.
Poe, of course, was aware of these two aspects of the meanings of words. Reread the paragraph beginning “In an
assembly of phantasms…” at the end of p. 2 (it continues on p. 3). Explain the denotative and the connotative
meanings of the following words: (Use complete sentences in your explanations.)
1. phantasms 2. gaunt 3. shrouded 4. horror 5. jest
