PLANKTON!
The word plankton comes from the Greek word, planktos, which means to drift.
+ Plankton are at the base of the ocean food web.
There are two basic types of plankton.
1. Plant like plankton: phytoplankton
2. Animal like plankton: zooplankton
Phytoplankton
How do phytoplankton obtain their food? Photosynthesis (energy from sun) or chemosynthesis
The two most common types of phytoplankton are:
DIATOMS
Kingdom: Protista
- A type of algae
Cell walls made of silica

DINOFLAGELLATES/FLAGELLATES
Kingdom: Protista
- Two flagella
- One wraps around
cell and the other
is used for
navigation
- Photosynthesis
- Responsible for
Red Tides
Zooplankton
How do zooplankton obtain their food? They are heterotrophs so they eat it/absorb it into their bodies
Distinguish between the words holoplankton and meroplankton.
- Holoplankton is plankton its whole life
- Meroplankton is plankton for only part of its life
What is nekton? Opposite of plankton; free swimming; can swim against currents
-
FORMANIFERA
Sometimes called forams.
Protista
Have pseudopodia that go
through pores to catch food
Shells sink to bottom to form
ooze
Help form limestone and
chalk
RADIOLOARIANS
-
Protista
Silica
shells
Spiny
Pseudopodia to catch food
Forms radiolarian ooze
ZOOFLAGELLATES
JELLYFISH
CILIATES
-
Protista
Hairlike projections called
cilia
Paramecium
Crawl around on plants and
other surfaces.
SIPHONOPHORES
-
- Kingdom Animalia
- Cannot swim against
currents
- Wash up on beaches easily.
