Eating Disorders Learning Target: I can differentiate between Bulimia and Anorexia Myth Eating disorders affect only females. Fact Eating disorders affect females more than males, but males do develop eating disorders. Because of this myth males are even less likely than females to seek help for an eating disorder. Taking Weight Loss to Extremes The United States spend a lot of time worrying about weight. Some people become carried away with losing weight and becoming thin. Others may have serious underlying psychological problems that require professional treatment. Taking Weight Loss to Extremes These people develop eating disorders. Extreme & damaging eating behaviors that can lead to sickness and even death. Anorexia Nervosa Is an eating disorder characterized by selfstarvation leading to extreme weight loss. Anorexia means “without appetite”, And nervosa means “of nervous origin”. Most people suffering from Anorexia Nervosa are female. It is particularly common among teenage girls and young women. Anorexia Nervosa Anorexia Nervosa However, men and boys can also have the disorder. There are many theories to the causes of anorexia, but experts agree that the disorder is related to how an individual sees themselves, and their ability to cope with stresses of everyday life. Anorexia Nervosa People with anorexia nervosa may eat so little they develop malnutrition, the condition in which the body doesn’t get the nutrients it needs to grow and function properly. Treatment may include: A stay at the hospital, Patient is fed nutrients and receives counseling. If untreated: May lead to serious illness or death. Bulimia Also called Bulimia Nervosa, is a condition in which people repeatedly eat large amounts of food and then try to get rid of the food they have eaten. Like anorexia, typically bulimia, is more common among young women and teenage girls. Bulimia Bulimia People with bulimia are extremely concerned about being thin and beautiful. The disorder grows out of their desire to control their bodies. Bulimia Bulimics may force themselves to vomit food, believing that this will put them in control of their bodies. They may also take laxatives, which, make food speed through the digestive system with little time to release nutrients. Other people who are bulimic may go on crash diets to make up for overeating. The end result being, the person does not get enough nutrients. How Bulimia Damages the Body Stomach acids from frequent vomiting can damage teeth and injure the mouth and throat. Starvation can damage the heart. Overeating can cause the stomach to enlarge. Vomiting can cause the stomach to rupture. Laxative abuse can damage the kidneys. Vomiting and laxatives can lead to dehydration or drying out of the body. Emptying the body can cause malnutrition. Signs & Symptoms of Bulimia Eating uncontrollably, binging, and purging Forced Vomiting or Vomiting Blood Abusing Laxatives, or Diuretics Going to the bathroom frequently after eating Preoccupied with body weight Depression and mood swings Feeling out of control Swollen glands in neck and face Heartburn, bloating, indigestion, or constipation Irregular menstrual periods Dental and gum problems Persistent sore throat Bloodshot eyes Weakness, Fatigue, Exhaustion Overeating & Obesity People overeat for a variety of reasons: Boredom Stress Habit Overeating is not as severe as bulimia or anorexia. However, it may lead to obesity – being 20% or more over your desired weight – it can result in serious health problems. Binge Eating Disorder This eating disorder is characterized by an addiction to food. An individual suffering with compulsive overeating disorder has episodes of uncontrolled eating or binging, during which he or she may have a pressured, frenzied feeling. The person may continue to eat even after becoming uncomfortably full. The binge is typically followed by a period of intense guilt and/or depression. Binge Eating Disorder • People with binge eating disorder regularly have an uncontrollable urge to eat large amounts of food. • They usually do not purge after a binge. Health Risks Treatment The main physical risks of binge eating disorder are excess weight gain •and People with binge eating disorder need help in learning how to control unhealthy dieting. their eating. Possible Causes Some people use binge eating to avoid dealing with difficult emotions, such as anger, or with stressful situations. • They often need to address underlying emotional problems. Overeating & Obesity Excessive body fat puts a strain on the heart and lungs. The obese person may exercise less, resulting in more weight gain and increased health risks. Such risks include high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. May also lead to low self esteem or even psychological and social problems. Overeating & Obesity Overweight & Obesity Hereditary is a factor, overeating and lifestyle choices often cause obesity. The obese person needs to replace poor eating habits with healthful ones. Help for People with Eating Disorders People who need help rarely get better on their own. This is because they do not have a realistic view of themselves. Family and friends may play a large role, but professional help is usually required. Many communities have clinics and support groups. Treatment and recovery is usually a long term process.
